  PENZANCE RUNNING DAY - 19 April 2015

A record number of visitors turned out for our annual Penzance Vintage Bus Running Day & VR Revival on 19 April 2015, with a total of 4,826 passenger journeys counted. The sunshine and variety of visiting vehicles no doubt enabled us to achieve this 26% increase on last year's record.

26 vehicles, spanning an operational period from the 1950s to the 2000s, operated on a variety of routes including Penzance to Camborne, St Ives, St Just, Hayle, Marazion/Perranuthnoe, Praa Sands, Paul/Sheffield and out to Sennen Cove and Landís End. As in previous years, smaller vehicles tackled the notoriously tight route into Mousehole; all made it out again!

The most popular routes were to St Ives (Service 17) and Lands End (Service 1), with former Western National Bristol FLF 2019 (824 KDV) proving the most popular vehicle in terms of numbers carried. King Harry Bedford 669 never had a seat to spare.

As well as the humans, we were pleased to record a huge rise in canine ridership this year, which was up 143% to 68 dogs. Among the travellers was a dog named 'Boo' (probably not the famous one), who favoured the scenic but ruff Service 14 aboard Bristol SUL 420 for his ride from St Ives to Penzance. Bristol VR 1056 proved to be the most popular choice for dogs, however.

Open top services were a major attraction, as was the opportunity to sample a range of Bristol VRs climbing the hill from Sennen Cove on Service 1.

The spectacular weather, together with the Cornish scenery, have resulted in many excellent photographs. Here are our favourites from among those you've sent to us, with thanks to the photographers.

Our thanks go to our co-organisers at Cornwall Bus Preservation Society, and to vehicle owners, crews, sponsors and other volunteers for making the event such a success.
