  PENZANCE RUNNING DAY - 16 April 2017

The Cornwall Bus Preservation Society in association with the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust invites you to come to sunny, warm West Cornwall for our event on Sunday 16 April 2017. Don’t forget that this is Easter weekend in 2017 so bring all the family and friends and enjoy a long weekend break in Cornwall. Book your accommodation early for the widest choice. This will be the 10th vintage bus running day in Penzance following the original Final VR Running Day on 9 December 2006 – yes it’s more than 10 years since VRs were withdrawn from everyday service! For this special milestone event we are aiming to break the record for the number of VRs in service and have already been promised several vehicles which have not appeared at this event before.

With it being Easter, a further feature for 2017 will be a road run on Easter Monday for vehicles, crews, Supporters and other helpers who contributing to Sunday’s running day.   This morning run will set off from the bus station around 09.30 and follow the circular 300 route from Penzance to Marazion, St Ives and Land’s End returning to Penzance in the middle of the day to allow for onward travel. The run will also give photographers the opportunity to see vehicles out on the road along this scenic route.

The Running Day will be based at Penzance Bus Station with vintage bus services running from 10.00 until 17.00. Routes will include Penzance to Camborne, St Ives, St Just, Hayle, Marazion/Perranuthnoe, Praa Sands, Paul/Sheffield and out to Sennen Cove and Land’s End. Last year we introduced a new circular route to Sancreed via Newlyn Bridge, Drift and Tremethick Cross which proved to be very popular so will be included again in 2017 along with an open-top town service round Penzance. A new short working to Relubbus is also being introduced this year.  Again we are planning to run small vehicles into Mousehole, one of the many highlights of previous events. The Penzance Running Day is renowned for the spectacular coastal and country scenery and a new feature will be mystery tours by Royal Blue coach.

A feeder service to Penzance (18A) will leave Camborne Bus Station at 09:20 and return from Penzance at 17:30 (arr. Camborne 18:10). Another feeder service to Penzance (17) will leave St Ives Bus Station at 09:35 and the last return from Penzance departs at 16:00 (arr. St Ives 16:30).  Also at 09:35 a feeder service will run from Goldsithney to Penzance (22), with the final return leaving Penzance at 16:00 (arr. Goldsithney 16:16).

Mousehole in the 1950s – Bedford OB bus No. 517 swings wide to turn into the narrow streets leading out from the harbour   St. Ives – probably the most spectacular bus station site in the UK – three different routes to and fro’ Penzance

As always, the day will revive memories of VR operations in West Cornwall – some of these plus others, new to the event, will be in service.
