  PENZANCE RUNNING DAY - 21 April 2019

The Cornwall Bus Preservation Society in association with the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust invited you to come to sunny, warm West Cornwall for our event on Sunday 21 April 2019. This was our 12th vintage bus running day in Penzance following the original Final VR Running Day on 9 December 2006.

The Running Day was based at Penzance Bus Station (adjacent to the main railway station)  with vintage bus services running from 10.00 until 17.30. Routes around West Cornwall included Penzance to Camborne, St Ives, St Just, Hayle, Marazion/Perranuthnoe, Goldsithney, Praa Sands, Paul/Sheffield and out to Sennen Cove and Land’s End (and the airport) with small vehicles going into Mousehole, a highlight for many.

There were feeder bus services to and from Camborne, Newquay, St Ives and Goldsithney.

Despite competition from Easter gatherings and from the beaches on what was the hottest day of the year, a record number of 6,800 passenger journeys were provided on 32 vehicles over 124 services

PENZANCE – 19 April 2020 – DIARY DATE

2020 is the centenary year of the formation of the National Omnibus & Transport Company which, in West Cornwall, became the fondly remembered ‘Western National’ so several additional special attractions are being planned alongside the VR Revival and Vintage Bus Running Day on Sunday 19th April.

As always, the day revived memories with a variety of vehicles taking part to the delight of enthusiasts, photographers and the wider public. (C) Helen Billington

Excursion for Entrants and Volunteers

On Easter Monday five vehicles took many of the 100 plus volunteers who contributed to the running day success on a tour from Penzance to Land’s End via Newlyn to Paul and Sheffield, which involved climbing the long 1 in 6  Chywoone Hill out of Newlyn, then on to Penzance via St Buryan and Porthcurno. After a short stop they took the road down to Sennen Cove with another steep climb out, past Land’s End Airport to St Just  and then on to St Ives. The final stage was to Marazion and back to Penzance

The former 300 service route around West Cornwall took volunteers up Chywoone Hill out of Newlyn on Easter Monday - Bristol VRs UWV 614S and C412 HJN took the 1 in 6 gradient in their stride. (C) Helen Billington

Programmes

To accompany this event a fully illustrated colour programme was produced with a cover based on the Western National timetable for the area in Summer 1989.  In addition to timetables and details of the vehicles attending, the programme includes an illustrated history of the liveries carried by buses forming the West Cornwall scene over the past 100 years and more.

Programmes were extremely popular but a very few remain.  The article has lasting value and copies can be purchased while stocks remain
